Leon Mimbs passed away Tuesday, December 7, 2010 in Cocoa, FL.
Leon was born December 10, 1932 in Lake Wales to the late William Elmer & Evelyn A. (Dorough) Mimbs. Raised in the Baptist faith, Leon left Lake Wales in 1961 for the phosphate mines of Polk County, then to Fort Myers in 1969 and on to North Carolina in 1979. He returned to Florida in 1986, settling in Cocoa. Retiring in 2000 from Paravant Computer Systems in Melbourne, his diverse career included railroad brakeman, butcher, roofer, store-owner, fisherman, and logistics supervisor. At work, he was known for his dedication, quick wit, and fun-spirited practical jokes. At home, Leon enjoyed fishing, gardening, the outdoors, and was a Miami Dolphins football fan. He lived his life by the motto from his high school yearbook, “Hope for the best, prepare for the worst, and take what comes.”
Survivors include his high school sweet-heart and wife of fifty-eight years, Dorothy (Scott) Mimbs; sons, William “Lee” Mimbs Jr. (Mary) of Cape Coral, Scott Mimbs (Carmen) of Viera and Charles “Chuck” Mimbs of Sparta, NC; brothers, Byron Mimbs (Barbara) of Melbourne, Donald Mimbs (Arzetta) of Killen, AL, Glenn Mimbs (Connie) of Romeoville, IL, and William Elmer “Billy” Mimbs Jr. of Palatka; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 PM until the funeral service at 2:00 PM, Thursday, December 16, 2010 in the chapel of Marion Nelson Funeral Home in Lake Wales. Rev. Joseph Mimbs will officiate. Interment will follow at the Lake Wales Cemetery.
