Geologist
Walter Astrid Payne of Winter Haven passed away Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at the Florida Hospital in Orlando.
Born December 3, 1931 in Fort Meade; he was raised in Frostproof and returned in 1979 until 2000 when he moved to Winter Haven and summered in Murphy, NC since 1988. He was a geologist, a member of the First United Methodist Church in Frostproof, and a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the U.S. Army. He liked mining gold, operated a small grove and enjoyed geological study. He graduated from Florida State University and was a member of the American Geological Society. He was a very good gardener and a great father and grandfather.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Barbara L. Payne; daughters, Connie Kim (husband, Doug) Dix of Arlington, WA, Lori Kay (husband, Lamar) Edwards of Winter Haven, and Geri Lisa (husband, Larry) Heier of Murphy, NC; son, Walter Allen Payne of Winter Haven; brother, John Payne of Boulder City, NV; sister, Geraldine Payne of New Orleans, LA; 13 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
Memorial services will be held 2:30 PM, Sunday, October 26, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church of Frostproof. In lieu of flowers, family requests donations be made to the First United Methodist Church, 150 Devane, Frostproof, FL 33843.
