LAKE WALES--Virgil “Papa Coon” Powell Jr. of Lake Wales died of cancer Saturday, November 25, 2006 at his residence. He was 75.

Born April 25, 1931 in Dundee; he was a lifelong resident of the area. He was a retired landscaper for Florida landscaping. He was of the Baptist faith and a veteran of Korea, serving in the U.S. Army. He was the former assistant fire chief in Timberlane and past president of the Blue Ribbon C.D. Radio Club. He enjoyed fishing and following the Florida football teams. He was also a boxing fan.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen June Powell of Lake Wales; daughters, Patricia Waters of Lake Wales; Bonnie Kay Powell of Ashville, NC; sons, Johnny Ray Powell of Lake Wales; Tommy Gene Powell of Polk City; Timothy F. Powell of Lake Wales; sister, Evelyn Watson of Lake Wales; 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.
