Sanford Shields, 74, of Lake Wales died Saturday, September 01, 2007 at his home.

Born December 26, 1932 in Lake Wales; he was a lifelong resident. He was a retired rural letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. Mr. Shields was an ordained minister and a member of Central Avenue Baptist Church in Lake Wales. He was a graduate of the Lake Wales High School and known for basketball. Mr. Shields was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the US Army; a volunteer and coach for many years at Lake Wales Little League; loved hunting, gardening and all sports. He was also a devoted Gator fan.

Sanford Shields is survived by his wife of 52 years, Betty J. Shields; daughters, Cynthia N. Laureti of Winter Haven; Vivian Vance of Lake Wales; son, Sandy Shields of Lake Wales; and six grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until the funeral service at 6:00 PM, Thursday, September 06, 2007 at the Marion Nelson Funeral Home in Lake Wales. Interment will be 10:30 AM, Friday, September 07, 2007 at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell. In lieu of flowers, family requests donations be made in his honor to the Central Avenue Baptist Church, 113 West Central Avenue, Lake Wales, Florida 33853.
