Samuel L. “Sam” Smith, 64, of Winter Haven passed away Monday, January 14, 2008 at the Winter Haven Hospital.

Born May 18, 1943 in Indianapolis, IN; he came to the Winter Haven-Lake Wales area in 1951 from New Agusta, IN. He was a retired Equipment Technician for GTE/Verizon and was associated with the Auburndale Community Church. He coached Little League Football and Baseball in Winter Haven Sertoma Park. He enjoyed Nascar and Indy 500 racing and was an avid Notre Dame fan.

Survivors include his wife, Karen Smith of Winter Haven; daughter, Leigh Ann Acken of Port Charlotte; sons, Jarrod James Smith of Chatnooga, TN; John Covington of Carmel, IN; brothers, Joseph Smith of Ocala, FL; John Smith of Land-O-Lakes, FL; sister, Mary Gukich of Aurora, CO; and seven grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 PM until service time at 6:30 PM, Friday, January 18, 2008 at the Auburndale Community Church, 1955 Highway 92 West, Winter Haven. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Winter Haven Little League.
