Sammy Gene Greenway, 90

Sammy Gene Greenway of Frostproof passed away Thursday, May 2, 2024, at his residence.

He was born June 13, 1933, in Swainsboro, Georgia, to the late Sanford Jordan Greenway and Nana Lou Brantley, and moved to Frostproof, Florida, in 1936. After graduating from Frostproof High School in 1952, Sammy enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served as an air traffic controller until his retirement in 1974, having achieved the rank of Senior Master Sergeant and having been awarded both the Air Force Commendation Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal. After his retirement from military service, Sammy returned to Frostproof where he worked for what became the Citrus Hill Manufacturing Company from 1974–1989, and later worked from 1989–2003 at what is now the Avon Park Executive Airport.

Sammy was preceded in death by his brothers, A.S. “Harold” Greenway, and Robert Sanford Greenway. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Gwendolyn Smith Greenway; daughter, Deneen Greenway Wright, and husband Jeffrey of Frostproof; son, Adam Wade Greenway, and wife Carla of Frostproof; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, May 6, at 10:30 am at Silver Hill Cemetery in Frostproof with Dr. Adam W. Greenway officiating.
