Ruben “Handsome Poncho” Martinez Sr. of Lake Wales passed away Saturday, August 9, 2008 at Good Shepherd Hospice in Auburndale.

Born June 26, 1933 in Ocotlan, Jalisco, Mexico; he came here 35 years ago from North Carolina. He was the retired owner/operator of Martinez Electronics in Lake Wales and of the Catholic faith. Mr. Martinez was full of life and enjoyed fishing, traveling and dancing. He was a very caring person and always wanted to help others. One of the ways he helped other was by volunteering with AA in the prisons.

Survivors include his long time companion, Esther Krapf; daughters, Inita Lopez of Lake Wales, Frances Gonzalez of Lake Wales, Beatrice Williams of Vancouver, WA and Lupe Castrellon of Lake Wales; son, Ruben Martinez Jr. of Lake Wales; 16 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM, Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at the Marion Nelson Funeral Home in Lake Wales. Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM, Wednesday, August 13, 2008 at the funeral home with Rev. Mahlon Smith officiating. Donations may be made to the Good Shepherd Hospice, 105 Arneson Avenue, Auburndale, Florida 33823.
