Frostproof

Richard Earl Freed of Frostproof, FL, completed his incredible life on October 16, 2026.

He was born Richard to his loving parents, John and Sally Freed. He was Dick to his siblings, Jack (Judy) and Pat and to his favorite Uncle Sam. He was also Dick and so very devoted to his dear wife Lynda. He was fun and found humor in EVERYTHING. ALWAYS! He was Dad to Lindy Wilcox, John (Rachel) Wojcicki, Andy (Lauren) Wojcicki, and Joe (Lina) Wojcicki. He was Grandpa to Jalin Wilcox, Elise Wojcicki, Sam Wojcicki, Helen Wojcicki, and Lila Wojcicki. He was Uncle Dick to Alan, Amy, Carrie, Matt, Karen, April, Mike, Sue, Ally, Andy, Hans, Phil, Icee, Matt, and many more.

He was Mr. Freed to fellow teachers and 34 years and three generations of adoring 5th-grade science students in North East, PA. He was Rocket Man to 53 years of model rocketry campers at Camp Lutherlyn. He was the River Rat on CB radio. He was camp leader Dick to his fellow Scamp Campers annually at Highlands Hammock. And he was a dear friend and neighbor to many growing up in Mount Pleasant, PA, attending Thiel College, and living and working in North East, PA and then retiring in Frostproof after 2001.

He LOVED his church, his family, his friends, his students, his campers, teaching, rocketry, cherry pie, singing, camping, computers, Star Trek, Yoda, adventure (motorcycles, scuba diving, rock climbing, whitewater rafting) travel/driving, music, lighthouses, photography, woodwork, and a burger with a full slice of onion.

He was a committed, faithful, and fun servant of God. He was an active member of several churches including St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in North East and Sun Ray United Methodist Church in Frostproof.

He was honest. He was happy. He did not complain. Ever. And he loved his life and all who were a part of it.

His family would like to thank every one of his friends, students, and campers who enriched his life so greatly. They would like to thank the clinicians who cared for him in his final months. And they offer special thanks to his proud friend and protégé Geir Hundal, his dear friend Pastor Peggy Moss, and his adopted big sister, Roma Bennett “for your support to dad and all of us”.

“You live now and forever in our hearts. We love and thank you, Dad!”
