Richard Jackson Benson passed away on April 21, 2026, at Advent Health in Orlando, Florida. He was born on February 28, 1945, in Bellevue, Pennsylvania, to Theodore Edwin Benson and Marian Jackson Benson.
Dick spent his childhood in West View Borough near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and graduated from North Hills High School with the Class of 1963. He proudly served in the United States Army as a Military Policeman stationed in Thailand.
Following his military service, Dick moved to Florida, where he spent most of his adult life in Babson Park. He dedicated 32 years to the Lake Wales Fire Department, building a respected career in public service. At the time of his retirement, he served as Fire Marshal for Lake Wales, Florida.
Dick found his greatest joy outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who spent countless hours exploring Florida’s waterways aboard the many boats he owned throughout the years. A passionate Harley-Davidson rider, he attended Bike Week in Daytona for many years and especially treasured his Harley-Davidson Firefighter Edition motorcycle, a model available only to firefighters. He also looked forward to participating annually in the Alafia Rendezvous conclaves.
Throughout his life, Dick shared a special bond with his dogs. From his first companion, Harley, a Great Dane, to his beloved springer spaniel, Maylee Jane, his pets brought him lasting companionship and happiness. Maylee Jane, in particular, brought great comfort and joy during his final months.
Dick is survived by his wife, Sydney Benson; his sister, Charlotte Benson Cooper of Reading, Pennsylvania; and his brother, Thomas J. Benson of Normal, Illinois.
A memorial service for Dick will be held at Marion Nelson Funeral Home in Lake Wales on Friday April 24, 2026, at 2:00 PM.
