Peter J. Mathias of Winter Haven passed away Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at the Life Care Center of Winter Haven.
He was born April 22, 1918 in Pittsburg, PA to the late Andrew & Helen Matiasz; and he came to Florida from Sharpsville, PA in 2006. He was a retired electrician from Westinghouse after 35 years, was a member of the Chestnut Ridge Church of God in Hubbard, OH and a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy on the USS Massachusetts. Peter and his sister played harmonicas together at worship services.
Peter was preceded in death by his wife, Anna “Peggy” Mathias and a brother, William Matiasz. Survivors include daughter, Debra Billings of Winter Haven; sons, John E. Mathias of Winter Haven and William E. Mathias of Kansas City, MO; sister, Annie Matiasz of Jackson Center, PA; six grandchildren, Alicia Zahniser, Britany Roe, Angie Bracken, Mandy Ivancevich, Melody Tomlinson and Andrew Mathias; and twelve great-grandchildren. The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff at Life Care Center and Cornerstone Hospice for taking care of Dad.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 pm until the funeral service at 2:00 pm Saturday, September 8, 2012 at the South Lake Wales Church of God with Rev. El Kelley officiating.
