Penelope McKay Updike, born November 30, 1952, in Winter Haven, Florida, died October 26, 2022. Mrs. Updike attended local Winter Haven schools and graduated in 1974 from the University of Florida with a degree in Spanish Education.

Mrs. Updike is survived by her beloved husband of 47 years, John C. Updike, and by their 5 children- Abigail Updike Skipper (Alan), John Conner Updike (Margaret), Maria Updike Nelon (Darren), Letta Updike Young (James) and Susan Penelope Updike, and 11 grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John W. McKay and by her beloved sister, Mary Ann Bruda. She is also survived by her brother, John M. McKay.

From her earliest days in Lake Wales, Mrs. Updike found spiritual joy at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd and in her family’s involvement there. One of the greatest blessings of her life has always been the love and great blessings provided by her church family.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 5, 2022 at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Lake Wales.

In leu of flowers, the family prefers donations to be made in Penelope McKay Updike’s honor, to the Lake Wales Public Library and to the Max and Tomi Blackburn Scholarship Fund for students in Honduras. Checks should be made payable to the Church of the Good Shepherd, 221 S. 4 th Street, Lake Wales, FL 33853, with simply “Penny” in the memo line.
