Nathan Underwood, 89, of Lake Wales, Florida passed away Thursday, January 1, 2015 at Bartow Regional Medical Center.
He was born August 24, 1925 in Enterprise, Alabama to the late Judson J. and Mattie Lula (Cotton) Underwood and he came to this area as an infant from Enterprise, Alabama. He served as a Polk County Highway Patrolman and retired from Citrus World in Lake Wales as well as from Proctor and Gamble in Bartow; he attended the First Presbyterian Church with his son and was a veteran of WWII, serving in the US Navy. He loved attending family reunions and listening to gospel music and enjoyed fishing, reading, watching football and critiquing the coaches.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Appie Underwood in 2006 and son, Nathan R. Underwood in 2011. Survivors include his son, James Underwood and wife Shelley of Babson Park; daughter-in-law, Mary A. Underwood of Bartow; sisters-in-law, Betty Sellards of Clermont and Vivian Underwood of Georgia; sisters, Ruth Jolly of Jacksonville and Rochelle Wiggens of Clermont; grandchildren, Jennifer Underwood, Jimmy Underwood, Kelly Turpin and Carla Parriott; and three great-grandchildren, Isabella & Austin Turpin and Marin Parriott.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM on Friday, January 9, 2015 and the funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, January 10, 2015 at the Marion Nelson Funeral Home in Lake Wales with Rev. Chad Reynolds officiating. Interment will follow at the Silver Hill Cemetery in Frostproof.
