Mildred Windham Nelson

June 10, 1917 — November 9, 2010

Mildred Windham Nelson, 93, of Frostproof died peacefully of age related causes on November 9, 2010 at Good Shepherd Hospice of Auburndale. Mildred was a resident of Frostproof since 1946. She worked as a sectionalizer at various canning plants in the area then worked at Badcock Furniture Store until her retirement.

Mrs. Nelson was preceded in death by her husband, J.E. Windham. She is survived by sons, Jim Windham of Palm City, FL, Joey Windham of Dearing, GA, Dickie Windham of Colorado Springs, CO; daughter, Carol Windham Love of Frostproof, FL; 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild; best friend, Shirley Pettit now of Georgia, and the Don and Barbara Love family where she was considered their adopted grandmother.

At the time of passing she was the oldest living member of the First Presbyterian Church of Frostproof. Mildred was a devout follower of Christ. She was also an active member to the Circle III Bible Study until her health interfered with her participation.

As a young mother she taught all of her children the following prayer which they all remember with fondness: "Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take."

As her children were growing up, Mildred helped them learn their Sunday School assigned Bible verses while she prepared their family's evening meal. Bible verses, spelling assignments and reading were believed to be a fundamental part of her children's development of which she was involved in on a daily basis.

Through her pet peeves she taught her children to respect others by paying attention to their manners; saying yes or no sir or ma'am, do not walk across another's yard, remove your hat and/or jacket upon entering a residence, sit properly at the dining table (do not put your elbows on the table) and use proper grammar and spelling.

Over the years some of her favorite activities included quilting, bread making, baby sitting the grandchildren, playing games of shuffleboard, scrabble, rummikub, traveling, keeping detailed travel logs, hiking, lectures of her travels and reading.

The family wishes to thank the entire staff of Winter Haven Hospital and Good Shepherd Hospice of Auburndale for their dedicated and devoted care to Mrs. Mildred Windham Nelson.

Visitation will be November 12, 2010 from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm at Marion Nelson Funeral Home of Frostproof. A memorial will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Frostproof on November 13, 2010 at 11:00 am, all are welcome to attend.
