Martha C. Smith

Martha C. Smith of Lake Wales, FL went to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 25, 2010 at the Good Shepherd Hospice facility in Auburndale at the age of 86 years.

Martha was born July 30, 1923 in South Charleston, OH to the late George and Carrie (Huffman) Hines; and came to Lake Wales from Springfield, OH in 1988. She retired after 25 years in education as a school guidance counselor for Springfield City Schools, OH and had been an active member of Hillside Avenue Church of God.

While in Florida she and her husband continued to be active in the community. They twice received the Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award for Polk County Schools. Martha was also involved in church missions and the regional and state Women of Church of God organizations.

Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Smith and her granddaughter, Melissa Bernhard. Survivors include daughter, Melodie Bernhard and husband Thomas of Greenville, OH; son, Craig Smith and wife Mary Anne of Boulder, CO; four grandchildren, Carrie Bernhard Banks and husband Matt of Richmond, VA, Michael Bernhard of Columbus, OH, Adam Smith, and Matthew Smith of Boulder, CO.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, July 31, 2010 at South Lake Wales Church of God. Burial will follow at a later date in Rosehill Cemetery in Springfield, OH. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the South Lake Wales Church of God (210 Presidents Drive, Lake Wales, FL 33859).
