Maria Gregoria Acuna, 88, passed away on September 12, 2026, at Somers Hospice House. She was born on December 10, 1937, in Bejucos, Mexico.
Maria was a homemaker whose life was centered on her home and the people she loved. She loved flowers and found joy in cooking, cleaning, and dancing. One of her greatest pleasures was feeding her family, and she expressed her love in the daily care and warmth she gave to those around her. Twenty years ago, she moved to Frostproof from Illinois, where she made her home and continued to be a steady and loving presence in the lives of her family.
She is survived by her husband, Santiago Acuna of Bejucos, Mexico. She also leaves her daughters, Adela Carbajal and her husband Baldomero of Crescent City, Florida, Reyna Acuna and her companion Juan Valdez of Frostproof, Maria DeJesus Velazquez and her husband Emilio of Naples, and Araceli Estrada and her husband Angel of Lombard, Illinois. Her sons, Diego Acuna and his wife Santos Benitez, of Mexico, Genaro Acuna and his wife Rosabla of Elgin, Illinois, Israel Acuna and his wife Carmela, of Elgin, Illinois, Santiago Acuna, Jr., and his wife Alaciel also of Elgin, Illinois, and Antonio Acuna and his wife Frinet of Georgetown, Texas, also survive her. She is also survived by her brothers, Valentin Aguilar of Mexico and Mario Aguilar of Frostproof.
Maria was preceded in death by her father, Francisco Aguilar, and her mother, Petra Espinoza.
Her family will remember her with love for the care she gave so freely, the meals she prepared, the beauty she saw in flowers, and the happiness she found in dancing and in being surrounded by those she loved. Her life was a blessing to her family, and her memory will be cherished always.
Visitation will be held on September 17, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, at Marion Nelson Funeral Home, 454 Buck Moore Rd, Lake Wales, Florida 33853. A Mass will also be held on September 17, 2026, at 1:30 PM, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 644 South 9th Street, Lake Wales, Florida 33853. Burial will follow at Silver Hill Cemetery in Frostproof.
