King Smith

October 19, 1947 — April 15, 2013

King Smith of Frostproof passed away Monday, April 15, 2013 at the Lakeland Regional Medical Center.

He was born October 19, 1947 in Lake Wales and he was a lifelong resident of the area. He was the facilities manager for Polk County School Board, a member of the First Baptist Church in Frostproof and a veteran serving in the U.S. Air Force. He coached high school softball and soccer for 8 years at Frostproof Middle-Senior High School and was named the 2013 Polk County Coach of the Year. He was an exceptional father, very active in youth sports in Frostproof for many years and was a retired race car driver.

King was preceded in death by his father, James Elmer Smith. Survivors include his daughter, Chelle Smith; mother, Margaret Smith; two brothers, Craig Smith (Rosemary) and Jace Smith (Linda), nephew, Justin Smith; and an uncle Ralph Blunt all of Frostproof.

Visitation will be held from 7:00 until 9:00 pm Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at the Marion Nelson Funeral Home in Frostproof. Funeral service will be held 3:00 pm Thursday, April 18, 2013 at the First Baptist Church in Frostproof with Rev. Darrol Hood officiating. Interment will follow at the Silver Hill Cemetery. The family has asked that all of King’s past and present athletes sit in the reserved section at the church.
