Joseph L. Mattingly, age 83, passed away at his home in Lake Wales Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008 due to cancer.
He was born Oct. 12, 1924 in Charlestown, IN. Preceded in death by his parents, Mary L. Mattingly and William Wallace Mattingly, nephew, Philip B. Carter, and his wife, Janet Robbins Mattingly passed away in 1999.
Joseph was a member of the Lake Wales Bethel Baptist Church in Lake Wales. He was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his sister, Charlotte Carter (Aubrey) of Charlestown, IN and Pompano Beach, FL and his good friend and companion, Martha Avirett of Lake Wales.
Also surviving are nieces and nephews, Elizabeth Faye Carter of Charlestown, IN, Sharon Cooper (Gary) of Portland, Maine, Wayne Sargent (Linda) of Marlboro, Mass., Debra Moriorty of Biddeford, Maine, Elizabeth Faye Howe of Saco, Maine, and William A. Sargent of Portland, Maine.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 PM until service time at 3:00 PM, Sunday, January 13, 2008 at the Bethel Baptist Church in Lake Wales. Following the cremation, he will be buried at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell next to his wife, Janet.
