John Van Slooten

September 18, 1921 — June 20, 2014

John Van Slooten, 92, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, June 20, 2014. He was a resident of Frostproof, FL since 1990, having previously lived in Minnesota, New York, Oklahoma, and Kentucky.

John was born on September 18, 1921 to the late John G. and Ida (Kuperus) Van Slooten. He was a WWII veteran serving in the Army. John was employed as a mechanical engineer by Honeywell, Xerox, and General Motors. He was the Chief Powerhouse Engineer when he retired in 1988 from the GM Corvette Assembly plant in Bowling Green, KY. He was an avid golfer and was a member of many golf clubs, including Indian Hills Country Club in Bowling Green, KY and River Greens Golf Course in Avon Park, FL. John also attended the First Presbyterian Church in Frostproof, FL and was active on the Long Range Planning committee.

John was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Zyl Van Slooten, a brother, Andrew Van Slooten, and sisters, Julia Buisman and Jeanette Lofgren.

John is survived by his daughter, Debra J. and husband Bill Joysey of Lake Orion, MI; sons Brian G. Van Slooten of Frostproof, FL and Jack L. Van Slooten of Bowling Green, KY; brother James E. and wife Charlene Van Slooten of Apache Junction, AZ; sister Esther M. Rosvold of Circle Pines, MN, seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and many special nieces and nephews.

Family visitation will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 101 N. Palm Avenue, Frostproof, FL from 10 – 11 a.m. Friday, June 27, 2014 with a memorial service immediately following. If so desired, donations can be made to the First Presbyterian Church Building fund or Cornerstone Hospice & Palliative Care Foundation, 2590 Havendale Blvd. NW., Winter Haven, FL. 33881 in memory of John.
