John S. Underwood

John S. Underwood of Lake Wales passed away Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at The Meadows in Winter Haven.

He was born March 22, 1920 in Sampson, AL to the late Judson J. & Mattie Lula Underwood; he came to Lake Wales in 1952 from Frostproof. He was a retired maintenance contractor for the Lake Wales Medical Center, a member of the Winter Haven First Church of the Nazarene and a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a former member of the V.F.W.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Joanna W. Underwood in 2007. Survivors include his step-daughter, Sally J. Straub of Lake Wales; brother, Nathan Underwood of Lake Wales; sisters, Rochelle Wiggins of Clermont and Ruth Jolly of Jacksonville; and two grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held 2:00 PM on Monday, August 17, 2009 at Marion Nelson Funeral Home of Lake Wales. Interment will be held at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell.
