John A. Gartland of Nalcrest passed away Sunday, August 10, 2008 in Illinois.

Born September 28, 1918 in Bayonne, NJ; he came to Nalcrest 25 years ago from Middlesex, NJ. He was a retired Letter Carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for over 25 years, a member of Saint Leo the Great Catholic Mission in Nalcrest, and a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a life member and past commander of the Dunellen American Legion Post 119, member of the Lake Wales Moose Lodge and NALC. He was also a member of the New Jersey Devils Fan Club and passed away at the NHLBCC Annual Convention. He also had a passion for sports, music and dancing.

John was preceded by his wife, Lucie Gartland, and younger siblings, James, Peter, Joseph, Timothy Gartland, Mary Maier and Theresa Staats. Survivors include his daughter, Marcia and husband, John, Walsh of Piscataway, NJ; and sister, Joan Phillips of New Jersey.

In lieu of flowers, donation envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Visitation will be held from 3:00 until 5:00 PM, Friday, August 15, 2008 at the Marion Nelson Funeral Home in Lake Wales. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, August 16, 2008 at Saint Leo the Great’s Catholic Mission in Nalcrest, FL.
