James “Dave” Johnson of Lake Wales passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, November 16, 2023, at his home in Lake Wales.
Dave was born January 9, 1948, in Pontiac, Michigan to the late James Earnest and Margaret Pauline Johnson. He moved to Lake Wales from Memphis, Tennessee in 2018. Dave was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and a true American hero. Dave also served with honor as a US Marine scout sniper in Vietnam.
After his military service and college education at Michigan State, Dave dedicated himself to community service. His commitment to education and progress led him to collaborate with the Tuskegee Institute, where he played a crucial role in expanding the university and overseeing facility maintenance, custodial, and janitorial services. Dave would eventually go on to manage university facilities across the entire west coast of the United States while living in California.
Dave's impact extended beyond Tuskegee and California as he took on the monumental task of restoring and removing asbestos from all Memphis City Schools. His dedication to safety and compliance was further demonstrated through collaboration with Memphis City Fire inspectors, ensuring that every building met the highest standards.
In addition to his professional achievements, Dave's kindness and selflessness touched the lives of many. His unwavering commitment to his family and community serves as an inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Dave leaves behind a legacy of adventure and cherished family moments. He embarked on cross-country journeys, introducing his three children and wife to many hiking adventures filled with wondrous mountains and landscapes. His children were able to experience many places by living in different states across the country. His love for exploration and creating lasting memories was a testament to his vibrant spirit.
Dave's memory will forever live on in the hearts of those he leaves behind as he is survived by his wife of 50 years, Virginia Marie; sons, Kelly David, Andrew James, and Kiel Adam; daughters-in-law, Dobromira Georgieva, and Lisa Nicole; granddaughter, Lillian Amy; sister, Patty “Sis” Throesch; many nieces and nephews; and those who were fortunate enough to call him a friend. May he rest in peace, knowing that his legacy of service, love, and adventure will endure through the countless lives he touched.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at Marion Nelson Funeral Home in Lake Wales. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.marionnelsonfuneralhome.com .
