Hugh Kelly Sheffield, 97

Hugh Kelly Sheffield of Lakeland passed away Monday, September 13, 2021 at Bartow Regional Hospital.

He was born February 2, 1924 in Frostproof to the late John and Caroline Sheffield. Hugh was a retired heavy equipment operator for Polk County and a veteran of the United States Navy that served in World War II. He loved fishing, gardening, and woodworking. He was a great storyteller.

Hugh was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Sheffield in 2016; sisters, Beatrice Lanier, Melbert Hinthorne, Alvena Blackwelder, Carolyn Mendez, Alda Phillips, and a three-year-old sister, Roberta Sheffield; and brothers, Jack Sheffield, Horce Sheffield, and Harman Sheffield. He is survived by his daughters, Mary Wise of Lakeland, and Yvette Weghorst (Richard) in Gainesville; son, Jerry Sheffield (Karen) of Lake Wales; sister, Ruby Cannon of Lakeland; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the funeral service at 11:00 a.m., Monday, September 20, 2021 at Frostproof Church of God with Pastor Sam Haag officiating. Interment will follow at Silver Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his honor can be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation (msfocus.org).
