Henryetta P. Johnson of Lake Wales went home to be with the Lord on Monday, January 28, 2013 following a lengthy illness. She was surrounded by family as well as her caretakers of Savannah Court and Compassionate Care Hospice.
Lula Henryetta Pritchett was born in the small rural farming town of Alberta, Virginia on Feb. 1, 1930. She was raised on the family farm and continued to enjoy gardening and canning vegetables all her life. She attended schools in Alberta, Virginia and was a graduate of Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, Virginia. Upon graduating she served as director of religious education at Bonaire Industrial School, in Richmond. In 1953 she moved to Lake Wales, to be near her brother, Dawson Pritchett, and sister, Margaret “Pritchett” Hurlbut, who had located there. She was employed as the secretary to the president at the, then named, First Federal Savings & Loan of Lake Wales. She soon met William F. “Bill” Johnson who was then operating one of the few television sales and service businesses in Lake Wales, Precision T.V.
They married in 1956 and shared over 56 years of marriage together. When they started a family Henryetta left her job at the bank to devote herself fulltime to her family. She was active in her church, leading and teaching Bible School for many years. She joined Bill in operating the business, doing the bookkeeping and many additional activities including being an active membership of the downtown association. They retired together, in 2005, after 54 years of service to the Lake Wales area and spent the retirement years traveling and enjoying time with family.
Henryetta was an active member of the Lake Wales Women’s Club for which she filled served on many committees. She was known for her highly skilled sewing accomplishments, having entered many a contest and came home with the ribbons! Family, friends and often strangers were the recipients of most of her treasured final products. She made many quilts, afghans, needlepoint pillows, and Christmas stockings, just to name a few, many of which were donated to local charities, hospitals and girls homes in the state. Through the Women’s Club she organized a penny drive. The pennies were collected at area businesses; she rolled every penny by hand and saw that the money was donated to the sponsored charities of the club. Her heart had a passion for taking care of those in need and she loved her family deeply. She greeted everyone with the biggest smile and interest in their lives. She radiated a beauty and grace that others were drawn to.
Henryetta was preceded in death by her mother, Lula Inez Pritchett-Daniel; father, Henry McCaddin Pritchett; three brothers: McCaddin Pritchett, Dawson Pritchett, Gerald Pritchett and her sister Margaret Hurlbut.
