Obituary for Helen F. McKenzie
It is with great sadness for her family to share the news that Mrs. Helen F. (Salawka) McKenzie of winter haven died on November 14, 2022, at the age of 96.
Born in Brooklyn, NY on September 30, 1926, Helen came to Winter Haven from Lake Wales in 1999. She was a graduate of Kings County Hospital School of Nursing in Brooklyn, NY and practiced her profession in both New York and Florida.
Helen was a member of the Alumni Association of Kings County Hospital, a past president of Lake Wales Inner Wheel, board member and co-founder of Lake Wales Senior Center, a member of American Legion Post 8 Auxiliary, VFW Post 2420, Columbiettes Knights of Columbus Auxiliary and a regular volunteer at St. Joseph Catholic Church Catholic Charities Food Bank where she was a devoted church member. Helen believed strongly in faith, family and volunteer service. Those who knew Helen will miss having intelligent, thoughtful conversations with her. Helen taught, by example, her motto “Everything in Moderation.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband Nicolo F. Arpino, husband William L. McKenzie, son Warren Wolfe, daughters JoAnn Adam and Catherine Arpino. Helen is survived by her children John Wolfe and his wife Desiree Cahill, Joan Strine, Rosemary Blake and her husband Denny, Elizabeth Beyert and her husband Ted, 13 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.
Arrangements for Helen are with Johnson-Nelson-Gill Funeral Home in Lake Wales. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Winter Haven on the 6th of February at 10:30 AM. Internment at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida The following day.
