On February 12, 2026, Frederick J. Ryan, Jr. passed away at the age of 95. Fred was born in Ballston Spa, New York and was the son of Frederick J. and Madeline C. Ryan and was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Bette Bruce Ryan, his sisters Madeline and Patricia, and his brother Henry. He is survived by his son Tracy Barnes (Carol) of Sasche, Texas; Cousin Elizabeth Collins; several nieces and nephews; as well as his beloved dog Robbie Ryan who resides in Charleston, South Carolina. His interests were golf, fly fishing, the New York Yankees, his many dogs, thoroughbred horse racing, and his summer home in Little Switzerland, North Carolina.
He was honored to serve his country in Korea in late 1951 and most of 1952 with the 176th Armored Field Artillery Battalion and upon his return from Korea he attended and graduated from Siena College.
For 68 years, he was involved in the hotel and resort business with positions at The Saranac Lake Inn, Saranac Lake, New York; The Gideon Putnam Hotel, Saratoga Springs, New York; The New Weston, Berkshire Place, and The Ritz Tower Hotels in New York City; as well as the Mountain Lake Club, Lake Wales, Florida.
Fred has been a mentor to many people throughout his career. One of Fred’s many claims to fame was a Golf pro who considered Fred as his mentor.
Fred will be missed by everyone he met. His lifelong career in the hotel and resort business earned him a special “Fred Award” at Mountain Lake.
A funeral service will be held at the Church of the Good Shepherd (221 S 4th St., Lake Wales, FL 33853) on Friday, March 6, 2026, at 10:30 AM. A reception following the service will be held at Mountain Lake Colony House (2300 North Scenic Hwy, Lake Wales, FL). Condolences can be sent to the family at www.marionnelsonfuneralhome.com.
