Elmer L. Stephens of Lake Wales passed away Monday, July 14, 2008 in Lake Wales.

Born June 07, 1915 in Ashburn, GA; he came to Polk County in 1929 and to Lake Wales in 1948 from Frostproof. He was a retired mail clerk for the U.S. Postal Service, an active member of the First United Methodist Church and a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was in the National Guard for many years, a member of the Lake Wales V.F.W. and on the Board of Directors for the Passion Play. He was a coach and past-president of the Lake Wales Little League and a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He enjoyed golfing and was a former member of the Lake Wales Country Club. He was also an avid stamp collector.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn B. “Polly” Stephens of Lake Wales; daughter, Pat & husband, Kary, Johnson of Hollywood; sons, Elmer & wife, Sandy, Stephens Jr. of Lake Wales and Bob & wife, Diane, Stephens of Lake Wales; brother, Harold Stephens of Jacksonville; sister, Margaret Wofford of Tallahassee; three grandchildren, Christa, Kelly & Summer; and four great-grandchildren, Caleb, Collin, Abigail & Trey.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM, Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at the Marion Nelson Funeral Home in Lake Wales. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Thursday, July 17, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church in Lake Wales. Interment will follow at the Lake Wales Cemetery. For those who wish, donations may be sent to Methodist Children’s Home or Good Shepherd Hospice.
