ELMA RUTH JOHNSON, 90

Elma Ruth Johnson of Frostproof went home to be with the Lord on January 28, 2021 while at the Oaks of Avon.

She was born January 7, 1931 in Huntington West Virginia to the late Garland and Murmel Mathews. She was of the Baptist faith, a member of Frostproof Baptist Church. She devoted her life to serving God. She would tell everyone she met about God’s mercy and grace. She was very musical and played the piano as a teenager. The churches in West Virginia would call on her to play the piano for them. Many years ago, she was the organist for the First United Methodist Church in Frostproof. Her grandson, Conrad, picked up on her love of music and continues as a singer/songwriter today.

Those who knew her called her Ruth, those that loved her called her Mom, Granny, and Mamaw. She enjoyed spending time with her family. Her hobbies were knitting and putting puzzles together. She is well known for the baby blankets she knitted and the dish towels/cloths that she made. She, along with her husband Junior, owned and operated Johnson’s Service Station/Garage in Frostproof for 49 years.

Ruth was preceeded in death by her parents, sisters Geneva McGuire, Helen Blumel, and Virginia Merritt; her brother Garland Mathews Jr.

She is survived by her two sons; John Irvin Johnson III (Serena) of Apollo Beach, Fl; Michael Johnson (Oleda) of Frostproof, Fl; grandchildren; Conrad & Emily Johnson of Franklin TN, Felecia & Oran Thornton of Frostproof, Fl; Lynn Johnson of Apollo Beach, Fl; great grand-children; Luke Thornton, Ellie Johnson, Leah Thornton, Sarah Johnson, Caleb Hernandez and Jonah Johnson. Brother; Tom Mathews, many nephews and nieces.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday, February 5, 2021 at the Marion Nelson Funeral Home in Frostproof. Graveside service will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 6, 2021 at Silver Hill Cemetery in Frostproof with Rev. Darrol Hood and Rev. Sam Haag officiating.
