WINTER HAVEN -- Mr. Elijah L. "Jr." Parris of Winter Haven died of heart failure Tuesday (Aug. 1, 2006) at Life Care Center of Winter Haven. He was 89.

Born in Roanoke, Ala., on April 19, 1917, he came to Frostproof in 1962, moving to Winter Haven in 1990. He retired from the water department for the city of Frostproof. He was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran of World War II. He was a former member of the VFW in Frostproof. He was a Methodist.

Mr. Parris was preceded in death by his wife, Mazelle "Mazie" Parris. He is survived by his daughter, Nena Schnabel, Winter Haven; brothers, Bob Parris, Wedowee, Ala., and Frostproof, Alton Parris, Glendale, Ala.; sister, Sarah Burdett, Roanoke; three grandsons; five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 this evening at Marion Nelson Funeral Home in Frostproof. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church of Frostproof. Burial will follow in Silver Hill Cemetery.
