Dr. Albert Olen Ryan, Jr., age 88, of Babson Park, FL passed away on Tuesday, November 16, 2010 at the Good Shepherd Hospice facility in Auburndale.
Dr. Ryan was born on August 20, 1922 in Covington, KY, the son of Albert and Esther (Stockfleet) Ryan. He was a veteran of World War II, trained as a corpsman at Camp Grant, Illinois. Dr. Ryan graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1947, was Medical Director for the Polk County, FL Health Department 1948-1950, and served with the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict as a flight surgeon 1950-1952. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati OH, had a family practice in Batavia, OH, then a private practice in internal medicine in Hollywood, FL, 1955-1961. Dr. Ryan moved to Brevard, NC in 1961 to begin a 30 year career at the Olin/Ecusta/Gladfelter Medical Center. He earned Board Certification in Occupational Medicine and became Medical Director. He was a member of Brevard Davidson River Presbyterian Church. Dr. Ryan retired in 1992 to his home on Crooked Lake in Babson Park, FL and joined the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Wales.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Lois Corbitt, PhD, and infant son, Timothy Olen Ryan. He is survived by his wife of sixty-six years, Elsie June (Felgar) Ryan; daughters, Judith Lynn Dowdy (Thelbert) of Fairview, NC, Meridel Lee Ellis (Michael) of Wellington, FL, Patricia Eileen Bryant of Hendersonville, NC, Kelly Jo Wheeler of Babson Park, FL; son, Thomas Patrick Ryan of Babson Park, FL, seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Wales on Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at 1:00 PM, with Rev. Chad Reynolds officiating. Burial to be at St. Paul’s in the Valley Cemetery in Brevard, NC at a later date. In lieu of flowers, gifts of remembrance may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Wales Music Ministry.
