Dixon Fraser Armstrong

Dixon F. Armstrong, 87, of Lake Wales, FL passed away of natural causes Thursday, July 24, 2014 at Lake Wales Medical Center. Born on July 26, 1926 in Greenville, SC to the late James C. and Mamie (Fraser) Armstrong, he was a resident of Lake Wales since 1953, moving from Eustice, FL. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Wales.

Mr. Armstrong served on the City Commission of Lake Wales in the 1960’s and 1990’s and was also Mayor of the city from 1995 to 1997. He served on the Lake Wales Care Center Board of Directors and Lake Wales Planning and Zoning Board, assisted with Meals on Wheels, was a member and past president of the Polk County Pharmaceutical Association and was a member of the Florida Pharmaceutical Association. He was a Registered Pharmacist and owner of Murray’s Pharmacy for 23 years prior to its closing in 1984. Mr. Armstrong attended Clemson University and Newberry College in South Carolina and Emory University in Atlanta, GA prior to graduating from the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy.

Mr. Armstrong enjoyed golf, jigsaw puzzles, loved animals and was an avid bridge player. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the United States Navy.

He is preceded in death by one son, Dixon F. Armstrong, Jr., four brothers and one sister. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Nancy C. Armstrong, sons Peter C. (Cecilia) Armstrong of Atlanta, GA, and James C. (Linda) Armstrong of Lake Wales, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Wales at 16 North 3rd Street, Lake Wales, FL 33853 or the Lake Wales Care Center at 140 East Park Avenue, Lake Wales, FL 33853.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 9th, at 2:00pm at the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Wales with the Reverend Chad Reynolds officiating, with interment of ashes in the courtyard garden of the church following the ceremony.
