Born Jan. 19, 1921, in Bartow, Mrs. Van Hook lived in the Lake Wales area her entire life.

After her graduation from Stetson University, Mrs. Van Hook joined the Women's Army Corps and applied to the Army's physical therapy school. The application was eventually accepted while she traveled the country working clerical jobs for the military.

Mrs. Van Hook shared her knowledge in the history classes she taught at Lake Wales Junior High School.

"She was very patriotic and very proud of her service," her son said.
