LAKE WALES – Clay A. Terry, 64 died at his home on Monday, March 26, 2007.
He was born November 8, 1942 to Clarence and Audrey Terry in Miami, Florida. He graduated from Miami Jackson High School, Florida State University, and the University Of Florida School Of Law in 1967. He was admitted to the Florida Bar, that same year.
After graduating from law school, Clay served in the United States Air Force from 1968 until 1972 as a Staff Judge Advocate.
He and his family moved to Lake Wales, Florida in 1972 where he joined the Bradley – Johnson Law Firm. After 34 years in practice, Clay retired in 2006.
He regularly assumed positions of leadership in community activities: serving as President of the Hillcrest PTO, President of the YMCA, Youth Coach, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Lake Wales Care Center, Lake Wales Art Show Volunteer, Chairman of the Board of Directors for HUD, and other civic groups. Clay was recognized for his contributions to Lake Wales as Citizen of the Year in 2003. He may be best remembered for his singing of the “Waubash Cannonball” during Little League Baseball games in the 1980’s.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Wales, serving as an Elder, Sunday School Teacher, and Choir member. He initiated the establishment of Lake Wales Retirement Center, Inc. He was also active in establishing new churches throughout the state of Florida.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Jane; sons Christopher Terry of Augusta, Georgia, and Paul Terry of Tampa, Florida; daughter, Tabitha Terry Moses of Alexandria, Virginia; and five grandchildren. Also, his mother, Audrey M. Terry of Lake Wales; brothers, Glenn Terry and Bruce Terry; and sisters, Dr. Linda Lastinger, Joan Yurt, and Donna Barringer.
A memorial service will be held Friday, March 30, 2007, 11:30 AM at the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Wales.
Visitation will be Thursday, March 29, 2007, 4:00-6:00 PM at the Marion Nelson Funeral Home in Lake Wales.
Memorial contributions can be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Wales and the Lake Wales Care Center.
