Charles Alfred Fleming of Frostproof passed away Thursday, February 16, 2012 at the Bartow Center.
He was born December 1, 1920 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England to the late George Charles & Alice Mary (Steeples) Fleming. He was a World War II veteran of the British Army, York and Lancaster Regiment serving in Burma with the 14th Army and began his police career with the Manchester, England City Police in the 1940's. Charles immigrated to the United States with his wife and young daughter in the early 1950's and began his career with the Bartow Police Department in 1955. He rose to rank of Chief of Police in 1979 and retired in 1986. He was a lifetime member of the Polk County Police Chiefs Association.
Charles was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Ivy Murdoch Fleming; a son, David John Fleming; two brothers, Colin Fleming and David Fleming; and two sisters, Patricia Needham and Josie Williamson. Survivors include his two daughters, Lorraine Johnson (Eugene) of Lake Wales and Carol True (Charles) of Frostproof; three grandchildren, Christopher True of Maclenny, FL, Candace True of Frostproof and Charles E. True IV of Frostproof; two sisters, Elsie Tagg of England and Linda Glasscock of England; and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be held 10:30 am Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at the Silver Hill Cemetery with Rev. Brian Smith officiating.
