Charles Elwood Coffman, Sr., a proud veteran and devoted family man, passed away on April 29, 2026, at AdventHealth Lake Wales while under the care of Vitas Hospice. He was born on May 12, 1948, in Athens, Alabama.
Charles served honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, where he bravely earned the Purple Heart. This recognition was one of his proudest accomplishments, reflecting his deep commitment and sacrifice for his country. Following his military service, Charles dedicated many years to his career as a caretaker at Phillip Rucks Citrus Nursery. Beyond his work, he enjoyed several hobbies and interests that brought him joy. He was an avid collector of eagle figurines and had a passion for traveling. Charles was also a strong supporter of the National Infantry Museum and enjoyed watching Western movies, especially those starring John Wayne.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Coffman and Eather Shedd; and brother, Wayne Coffman. He is survived by his daughter, Gail Respress, and her husband, Greg, of Frostproof; his son, Chuck Coffman, and wife, Deanne, of Greeley, Colorado; his sisters, Debrah Shedd of Athens, Alabama, and Francis Martin of Joppa, Alabama; his brothers, Allen Coffman of Summertown, Tennessee, Anthony Coffman of Auburndale, and Charles Coffman of Auburndale; and his caregivers, Kitty Riggins and Donna Allan. Charles was also a proud grandfather to four grandchildren, Ryan, Cody, Braden, and Vanessa, who meant the world to him.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 3, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Marion Nelson Funeral Home in Lake Wales. The funeral service will be on May 4, 2026, at 2:00 PM at the same location with interment to follow at Auburndale Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his honor can be sent to First Presbyterian Church of Frostproof (Post Office Box 126, Frostproof, Florida 33843) or to the National Infantry Museum Foundation (link below).
