Capt. Rick Winfield

Capt. Rick Winfield was born in Frostburg, MD in 1940, and died April 8, 2011 in Winter Haven Hospital.

He is preceded in death by his daughter, Dena Dunn. He is survived by his wife, Martha Smith Winfield; grandson, Rick Dunn, New York, NY; daughter, Torri McDermott, Marietta, GA; brother, Philip D. Winfield (Roz), Homestead, FL; stepdaughters, Julie Johnson and Susanna Valdes, Key Largo, FL; granddaughters, Kelsey and Delaney Dunn, Marietta, GA; step granddaughters, Samantha Valdes, Sarasota, FL and Amber Valdes of Key Largo, FL; nieces, Kim Marcum and Amanda Leonard, Winter Haven, FL and Jessica Winfield, Lineville, AL.

For most of Rick's working life, he was a seagoing tugboat captain traveling the eastern seaboard, the entire Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico on the tug Atlas. Starting as a deckhand in 1960 for Backus Towing in Miami, he was promoted to captain in 1966, then Operations Manager in 1978. In 1981, he was promoted to vice president of the company. In 2000 Rick went to work for Crosby Tugs in LA towing barges loaded with propane from LA to FL. He retired in 2006 and built a home in Lake Wales.

A memorial service will be held 3:00 pm, Friday, April 15, 2011 at the Marion Nelson Funeral Home in Lake Wales with Rev. Scott Markley of the First Baptist Church in Lake Wales officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Lake Wales.
