Bertha I. Newman of Lake Wales passed away Sunday, May 16, 2010 at the Lake Wales Medical Center.
She was born June 16, 1925 in Moulton, AL to the late Acel & Ada Sparks; she came here from Joiner, Arkansas in 1951. She was a retired citrus harvester and a member of the Golfview Park Church of God. She enjoyed fishing, taking care of her yard and family times.
Bertha was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas M. Newman in 1979, two sons, T.J. Newman and Larry Newman, one brother, Hubert Sparks and one sister, Neddie. Survivors include her son, Mike Newman of Lake Wales; daughters, Lillie Roberts and husband, Darrel of Decatur, MI, Bertha A. Newman of Lake Wales and Betty S. Gillis of Lake Wales; sisters, Mabel South, Alberta Sparks, Betty Streeter, Elizabeth Wilburn, and Judy Martin; brothers, Bishop Sparks, Harold Sparks, Jackie Sparks and Lee Sparks; 14 grandchildren, Sheila Wolkins, Wesley Padgett, Sgt. Jeff Arbogast, Jr., Kenneth Newman, Timmy Newman, Marie Newman, Nancy Newman, Mark Roberts, Tony Roberts, Darrel Roberts, Angela Harrison, Jackie Tackett, Teresa Roberts, Karen Jacobsen; many great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM, Thursday, May 20, 2010 and the funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, May 21, 2010 at the Marion Nelson Funeral Home in Lake Wales with Rev. Denny Cothern officiating. Interment will follow at the Lake Wales Cemetery.
