Barbara Payne Nanney

Barbara Payne Nanney, 71, died on February 4, 2010 in Lake Wales, Florida after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Sloane and Ruth Payne of Taylorsville, NC. She was a retired teacher from Sunset Elementary in Coral Gables, FL and has been a volunteer tutor with the Lake Wales Literacy Council for several years. She earned a B.A. from Salem College in Winston-Salem, NC and a Masters degree from Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Donald Nanney of Lake Wales, her son Maj. Charles Nanney and daughter Det. Kimberly Nanney Llambes who are with the Miami Dade Police Department. Four grandchildren, Marie Nanney, Katherine Nanney, Alexis Llambes, and Eric Llambes and daughter-in-law Olga Nanney, two brothers, Dr. Robert Payne in Connecticut and Dr. Sloane Payne in California.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2010 at 1:00 PM at the Marion Nelson Funeral Home in Lake Wales.

Memorial donations can be made in lieu of flowers to the Lake Wales Literacy Council (140 East Park Avenue, Lake Wales, FL 33853) or Good Shepherd Hospice (105 Arneson Avenue, Auburndale, FL 33823).
