Avy "Nell" Alexander

Avy “Nell” Alexander, a devoted matriarch of her family, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, at AdventHealth Lake Wales under the care of Vitas Hospice. She was born on June 8, 1940, in Lakeland, Georgia, and lived a life marked by love and dedication.

Nell was known for her strong will, determination, and free spirit. She was a devoted wife and stay at home mom. Nell was an environmentalist and a secretary at a doctors office for a time. She loved her family, wild flowers, birds, and fishing. She was very proud of her children and grandchildren, and her husband Gaines was the love of her life!

She is survived by her loving children: Debra Thompson of Bartow, Gaines Alexander, Jr. and his wife Jennifer of Winter Haven, and Daniel Alexander, Sr. and his wife Cynthia of Lake Wales. Nell also leaves behind her sister, Rose Dowdy of Haines City; her grandchildren, Jamie, Justin, Daniel, Nick, Emily, and Gaines Mitchell; along with nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Nell was preceded in death by her husband, Gaines Earlin Alexander, Sr., her brothers, H.L. Moncrief and John Scott Moncrief; her parents, Howard and Ethel Moncrief; her son-in-law, James Thompson; and her grandson, Jared Thompson.

Friends and family are invited to pay their respects at the Marion Nelson Funeral Home in Frostproof. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, from 2:00 PM until the funeral service at 3:00 PM. Interment will follow at Silver Hill Cemetery. Following the burial the family invites everyone to a gathering with dinner at Frostproof Community Center (137 E Wall Street).
