FROSTPROOF-Mr. Anderson Monroe Smith, 88, died Monday, January 26, 2009 at his home at South Lake Reedy Blvd. with his family at his side.

Born October 11, 1920 to Jefferson T. Smith and Juanita Smith in Okeechobee, Florida, he was named after his grandfather who was a pioneer itinerant Baptist preacher in the South-Central Florida area.

Mr. Smith moved to Frostproof with his family in 1951. He was a well-known plumbing contractor in the area. He was generous is his business by aiding those unable to pay for his services and was instrumental in helping churches financially by donating their plumbing needs. In past years, he was a deacon at First Baptist Church of Frostproof and was also a Sunday School Superintendent. He served the youth as director of Royal Ambassadors. After his retirement in 1983, he enjoyed gardening and growing tropical fruit trees. He loved sharing his produce with others. He was happiest when cooking and baking for family gatherings.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Elba Bartlett and Alberta Stroud; and brother, Harold Smith.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ruth P. Smith; sons, Andy Smith (Maribeth) and Jimmy Smith (Jenny B.); and daughter, Mary Catherine McDowell (Rodger); six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 PM, Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at the Marion Nelson Funeral Home in Frostproof. Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM, Thursday, January 29, 2009 at the Silver Hill Cemetery with Rev. Darrol Hood officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the First Baptist Church of Frostproof.
