INDIAN LAKE ESTATES--Alice F. DeVries of Indian Lake Estates died of heart disease Thursday (Oct. 12, 2006) at her residence. She was 94.

She was born July 24, 1912 in Willington, CT. She taught in a one room school in Connecticut. She received her teaching degree with a minor in “refrigerator management”. The travel bug hit her at an early age; she visited the Grand Canyon, with some girlfriends in the mid 1930’s, visited Venezuela with her future husband and was married to Simon DeVries in 1940. They lived in Venezuela for 25 years raising a family of three children. While living in Venezuela, Alice and Simon traveled throughout South and Central America. She and Simon came to the area from Colorado in 1973. In retirement, she and Simon traveled extensively to China, Africa, the Far East, the Galapagos Islands, Antarctica, Europe, India, Australia and Russia. In their travels they visited all the continents. She began her travels at the beginning of air travel and continued until the late 1990’s. She was a nature lover, who enjoyed plants, animals and birds.

Survivors include her daughters, Suzanne Jones of Rockville, MD, Jane Johnson of Duluth, MN; son, Mark Simon DeVries of Indian Lake Estates and Indonesia, 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Alice and her life will be held at a future time. In lieu of flowers, donations of remembrance can be made to the Nature Conservancy, National Audubon Society, World Wildlife Fund or Good Shepherd Hospice.
