Albert J. "Al" Wanyek of Lake Wales passed away Monday, December 13, 2010 at his residence.
He was born August 20, 1936 in Cleveland, OH to the late Alexander James and Elizabeth Thomas Wanyek; he relocated here from Amherst, OH 15 years ago. He retired as Senior Customer Service Agent after 35 years of service with Trans World Airlines and was a recipient of numerous customer service awards through TWA including a hand written commendation from financier and airline owner Carl Icahn. He was a dedicated leader of the Sheffield Lake Volunteer Fire Department from 1963 until 1976, named lieutenant in 1966. He was instrumental in creating the community Rescue Squad that led to a paramedic training program, one of the first created in Ohio. He was a past President of the Fireman's Association for two terms and served on the Sheffield Lake City Council in 1974. He was named Outstanding Citizen of the Year in 1966 and 1970 by Sheffield Lake Jaycee's, was an American Red Cross instructor for First Aid and CPR and served as Sheffield Lake Civil Service Director. He was most proud of the first place award earned by his crew in 1970 at the Ohio Fireman's Association Conference in the Light Ambulance Class.
Albert was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, John Wanyek. Albert was a loving family man with strong convictions, beliefs and ethical standards. Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Janet Wanyek; daughters, Deborah & Harold Ackerman of Oberlin, OH, Sheryl & James Kinser of Elyria, OH and Virginia & Wendell Gunn of Oberlin, OH; 5 grandchildren, Jennifer, Beth, Erik, Pearle and Madison; and 3 great-grandchildren, Aaron, Kayla and Lilly.
No local services are scheduled. Services and burial will be held in Brownhelm, OH.
